Roadtrip Northern Chile

6 DAY SELF-DRIVE PROGRAM

Discover the northernmost regions of Chile and be impressed by the vastness of the Altiplano, the country’s endless Pacific coast and the driest desert in the world.

travelArt has prepared an itinerary that will take you by car rental from Antofagasta to Arica, the city of eternal spring. On this trip, you will learn more about the history of the saltpetre boom, and discover natural monuments such as “La Portada”, an arch-shaped stone formation in the sea.

Antofagasta

Chinchorro and coastYou can immerse yourself in the millenary culture of the indigenous peoples of Chile while viewing unique rock drawings (geoglyphs).

In July 2021, the Chinchorro culture of this region was added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Discover the oldest mummies in the world there, dating back to around 5000 BC.

Another highlight on this route is the Lauca National Park with the beautiful Chungará Lake as one of its main attractions, one of the highest lakes in the world, located at the foot of the twin Payachata volcano – an ideal place for wildlife watching against a breathtaking scenery.

NOTES:

  • Pick-up of the car rental at Antofagasta‘s airport and drop-off of the car rental at Arica‘s airport.
  • During the “Altiplano winter” (December to March) there can be heavy rainfall in the north of Chile which can lead to road closures. In such cases there may be changes, so we may have to adjust the itinerary at short notice.
