Chile is moving decisively toward more sustainable transportation, establishing itself as one of the global leaders in green mobility. Through innovation and climate-focused investment, the country is transforming how locals and visitors move across its cities and regions.
Here are five key milestones that highlight Chile’s leadership:
1. Carbon-Neutral Metro in Santiago
Santiago Metro was recently awarded the “Huella Chile” Carbon Neutrality Seal, officially recognizing its operations as fully carbon-neutral.

With nearly 777 km of bike lanes, Santiago now offers the largest cycling network of any capital city in Latin America, encouraging low-impact urban travel for locals and tourists alike.
3. A World-Leading Electric Bus Fleet
Chile ranks second worldwide for electric buses in public transportation. By March 2026, the fleet is expected to exceed 4,400 buses, representing about 68% of the city’s bus fleet. This makes Santiago the city outside China with the largest electric bus network.

4. Copiapó: Fully electric public transport
The city of Copiapó, in the Atacama Region, became the first city in South America with a fully electric public transport system, demonstrating that green mobility leadership extends well beyond the capital.
5. Innovation Through Hydrogen Technology
In 2024, Chile introduced its first domestically manufactured hydrogen-powered bus, developed through a public–private partnership. Designed for both urban mobility and the mining sector, it marks another step forward in positioning Chile as a global reference in clean transport innovation.
Looking ahead: Mobility in Chile by 2035
Chile has committed to ensuring that by 2035, sales of light and medium vehicles, buses, taxis, shuttle service, and heavy mobile machinery will be 100% zero-emission.
For travel agencies, these advancements reinforce Chile’s reputation as a forward-thinking destination where sustainability, innovation, and responsible travel benefit both locals and visitors.
