Smaller and more compact than the llama, it is primarily raised for its exceptionally fine fleece. Soft, warm, lightweight and naturally hypoallergenic, alpaca fiber is prized around the world for its remarkable quality.

LLAMA

For thousands of years, llamas have been trusted companions of Andean communities. Strong, hardy and remarkably sure-footed, they have traditionally carried goods across the rugged mountain landscapes, playing an important role in everyday life and trade. Their sturdy build, expressive faces and unmistakable long, banana-shaped ears make them one of the Andes’ most recognizable animals.

VICUÑA

With its elegant silhouette and beautiful golden-brown coat, the vicuña is the smallest of the four. Living wild in the high-altitude landscapes of the Andes, it produces an exceptionally fine and precious fiber, considered one of the finest natural fibers in the world. For centuries, vicuña fiber was so rare and valuable that it was reserved for royalty.

GUANACO

Keep your eyes open in Patagonia and the high Andes, and you may be lucky enough to spot a guanaco. Unlike alpacas and llamas, guanacos live freely in the wild and are remarkably resilient, perfectly adapted to some of South America’s most challenging environments. Swift and sure-footed, they can reach impressive speeds when threatened and thrive in the dry, rugged landscapes they call home.

Whether you encounter one of Chile’s camelids against the dramatic backdrop of the Andes or across the open landscapes of Patagonia, take a closer look. can you tell which one it is?

Alpaca, llama, vicuña or guanaco — can you tell them apart?
