Named after Charles Darwin, who first described the species in 1834, it inhabits the temperate rainforests of Chilo\u00e9 Island and the Nahuelbuta Mountain Range.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chile-reise.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pudu-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Pud\u00fa\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18168\" \/><strong><br \/>\nPud\u00fa \u2013 The world&#8217;s smallest deer<\/strong>, the pud\u00fa is a shy, solitary animal that lives in the dense temperate forests of southern Chile. Despite its name, it is not a monkey but a tiny marsupial. With its large dark eyes, long tail, and tree-dwelling lifestyle, it inhabits the Valdivian temperate rainforest, including <strong>Puyehue National Park<\/strong>. It plays a vital ecological role by dispersing the seeds of native forest plants, but is considered Near Threatened due to deforestation, wildfires, and habitat loss.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chile-reise.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Huemul-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Huemul\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-18259\" \/>The <strong>huemul, Chile&#8217;s national deer<\/strong>, is one of the country&#8217;s most iconic native species. It inhabits the mountains, forests, and valleys of Patagonia, where it lives alone, in pairs, or with its young. This shy herbivore feeds on native plants, shrubs, and grasses found in southern Chile.
