This giant hole in the desert landscape is the heart of Chile&#8217;s economy. Even the Inca already extracted copper here. In 1910 the first modern conveyor system was built and now 600.000t of copper are produced here annually. The main pit is over 4km\/2.5mi long, 3km\/2mi wide and 850m\/2,789ft deep \u2013 until now.<br \/>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\t\t<div class=\"pane\">\n\t\t\nIdeally you visit Chuquicamata from Calama, or on your way back from San Pedro to Calama.
