Seal of Sustainability – “Sello S” for Tierra Atacama and Alto Atacama

The two renowned San Pedro de Atacama Hotels have been awarded the Chilean Seal of Sustainability, or the “Sello S.”
Several Chilean state institutions, including the Ministry of Environment and the National Tourism Board (Sernatur), have joined with the private sector and environmental groups to develop this Seal of Sustainability. It is awarded to service providers who follow sustainable practices, to help strengthen their profile and raise environmental awareness in Chile’s tourism industry.

Both hotels focus on increasing awareness among guests and staff, recycling, waste prevention, energy- and water-saving measures, as well as the purchase of local products in order to avoid long transportation and to support local providers.
Furthermore, the Alto Atacama possesses a solar thermal system for hot water and is able to run without air conditioning due to its special architecture that follows an ancient Atacama design.
At Tierra Atacama, some of the food comes from their own little vegetable garden, electric energy is provided by a photovoltaic power plant, and they recycle their water in two water treatment plants.
